In 1518, the great Renaissance scholar and physician Thomas Linacre encouraged Henry VIII to establish the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). Linacre was extraordinarily forward-thinking and his original aims – to regulate and educate those who practise medicine – still guide us today, a claim that few institutions can make after 500 years.
In 2018, to mark 500 years of medical history, the RCP unveiled the Linacre Wall, named in his honour as the college’s first president and benefactor. The wall is prominently displayed in the main entrance hall of the RCP’s Grade I listed building in Regent’s Park.
All those who donate £1,518 – symbolising the RCP’s founding year of 1518 – will be invited to have their name permanently inscribed on the wall.
More importantly, donors will know that they are making an enduring impact on the physicians, patients and medical profession of the future. Linacre Wall gifts can also be made in memory of a loved one or to recognise an esteemed friend or colleague.
Donations can be made either as a one-off gift or spread over a period up to 3 years.

Our aim is to inspire today’s RCP fellows, members and other supporters to continue Thomas Linacre’s mission to improve health and healthcare – and to celebrate their connection with this great institution through a physical permanent monument.
You can choose to make your gift to any of our fundraising priorities. Alternatively, you can give us the flexibility to direct your donation to where it is most immediately needed:
- Area of greatest need – Support the RCP’s vital work to improve health and healthcare. An unrestricted donation allows us to respond flexibly to emerging priorities.
- Improving healthcare – The RCP transforms healthcare by setting standards and supporting the development and improvement of clinical services. Your support helps to improve the quality of patient care.
- Campaigns – The RCP promotes, advocates and campaigns on the issues that we know matter most to our members, including protected time for clinical research. Your support helps influence the way that healthcare is designed and delivered in the future.
- Education – The RCP works to ensure that physicians are educated and trained to provide high-quality care throughout their careers. Your support helps us to deliver excellent educational content to a global community of physicians including underrepresented groups.
- Global – The RCP delivers projects aimed at strengthening health systems and improving medical standards across the globe. Your support helps to strengthen our partnerships with organisations such as the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP).
- Heritage – The RCP cares for books, manuscripts, artworks and objects of international significance relating to the lives and experiences of doctors. Your support enables ambitious conservation projects, provides exhibitions and school tours, and preserves medical history and knowledge

Donations can be made in one lump sum or by pledging to give as little as £42.17 per month for 36 months. Choosing to spread the cost will not delay the addition of your chosen inscription to the Linacre Wall.
